How to Use Beard Oil & Choose a Beard-Care Kit

A useful beard routine starts with a small amount of oil, attention to the skin beneath your beard, and the right tool to finish. This guide explains how to use TrailRoot beard oil and choose between our oil-and-brush and oil-and-comb kits.

How to apply TrailRoot beard oil

  1. Start after washing. Towel-dry your beard. Forest-Grade Reserve's directions recommend applying after a shower or face wash; Founder's Barrel's directions specify a towel-damp beard.
  2. Warm 4–6 drops between your palms. This is the application amount listed on TrailRoot's oil product pages. Spread the oil across your hands before applying it.
  3. Work into the skin first. Massage beneath your beard, then work the oil through the hair from roots to ends.
  4. Finish with a brush or comb. Use short, even brush strokes to distribute the oil, or comb from root to tip to arrange the beard. Work gently rather than pulling through resistance.

Follow the directions and ingredient information for the specific product you choose. Applying extra oil is not a substitute for distributing a small amount evenly.

Beard oil, brush or comb: what does each do?

  • Beard oil: the conditioning step. TrailRoot's oils are designed to soften beard hair with a lightweight finish.
  • Beard brush: helps spread oil through the beard and smooth strays. The TrailRoot bamboo beard brush has natural boar bristles and a bamboo handle.
  • Pocket comb and scissors: a portable option for arranging beard and mustache hair and handling detail grooming. See the Pocket Comb & Scissors product page for its specifications.

Earthy & woodsy

Forest-Grade Reserve

Pine · Cedar · Sandalwood

Earthy woods and fallen leaves, like a walk through the forest in fall. Familiar and comforting, with the feel of a weekend at the cabin.

Fresh & piney

Trailhead Pines

Pine · Cedar · Sandalwood

Fresh pine and evergreen woods, like unzipping the tent on a cool morning. Crisp forest air and that feeling of being away from it all.

Warm & rich

Founder’s Barrel

Oak · Sandalwood · Tobacco

Warm wood and tobacco with a little sweetness. Think a quiet evening on the porch, your favorite chair, and a little time to yourself.

Contains sweet almond oil (tree nut).

Forest-Grade Reserve and Trailhead Pines share the same listed notes, but have different woodland characters: earthy woods and fallen leaves for Forest-Grade Reserve; fresh pine and evergreen woods for Trailhead Pines.

Which beard-care kit fits your routine?

Choose a kit by the tool you will use, then check the full oil name on the kit page.

  • Soften & Shape: beard oil paired with a beard brush. A straightforward choice if you want to condition and brush as part of the same routine.
  • Everyday Taming: beard oil paired with the Pocket Comb & Scissors. A choice for people who want a comb and detail tools in the same set.
  • Grooming Tool Duo: brush plus Pocket Comb & Scissors. This is the tools-only set; beard oil is purchased separately.

Compare beard-care bundles and kits, or shop the individual beard oils if you already have your preferred tools.

Keep your beard brush ready for the next use

Tap out loose hairs after brushing. TrailRoot's brush care instructions recommend occasional cleaning of the bristles with mild soap, followed by air-drying bristles-down. Avoid soaking the wooden handle.
